On Being a Liberation Psychologist

As mental health professionals, we have a unique and important position (duty) in abolishing structures of oppression. We have a particular understanding of the on-going trauma caused by neo-colonialist systems of oppression such as white supremacy, anti-Blackness, xenophobia, mysogyny (machismo/marianismo), forced migration, mass incarceration/deportations and poverty (just to name a few). We also know, witness and hold space for the long-term emotional, mental and physical effects these systems continue to have on our communities.

As a first gen Xicana, growing up in South Central LA, I’ve experienced and witnessed multiple forms of oppression and how it impacts individuals, families and whole communities/generations. I knew even as a young child that these systems of oppression existed to benefit some while harming and dehumanizing others. With the help of my ancestors, family and community, I was privileged enough to begin my own healing journey and pursue a career as a Clinical Psychologist. I now use these experiences to help facilitate the healing & liberation of others, porque de que sirve los titulos sino es para liberar a nuestra gente? (What use are titles if not to free our people?)

Liberation and Mujerista Psychologies have both provided a framework that supports this work. With privilege comes responsibility, so I am humbled to now be able to offer this support to clinicians and other professionals* seeking consultation in these areas of psychology.

*Consultation services will center Black, Indigenous and Professionals of Color.

Looking for clinical and/or professional consultation in liberation, latinx feminism & abolition approaches to mental health? Looking for guidance that goes beyond theory but that supports the practice of healing and liberating communities of color through a Mujerista and Liberation Psychology lens?
